With all the water bordering Rhode Island is it any wonder why it is called the Ocean State. Not only is the ground water an issue when it comes to basement waterproofing and repairs, but the different types of soils also play a part. Rhode Island has different types of soils ranging from course sand, silty sands, silty clays, hard pan clay, and even rocky soils mixed with slate or ledge.
When you have a wet basement the moisture will come up into the upper levels of the home, causing dampness and possibly mold. Even if you do not have a wet basement you may have a moist, damp basement causing odors and mold to grow. There are simple things you can do to improve your basement:
1) Try not to store organic material in your basement - Wood, newspaper, cardboard, etc are "Mold Candy"
2) Install a dehumidifier (and automatically drain it or empty everyday)
3) Extend your downspouts at leat 7 feet away from your foundation
4) Organize your items on non-metal shelving units - keeping items off concrete flooring
5) Repair all water leaks such as wall leaks around pipes, wall rod ties, ground water coming in the floor and wall seams.
Remember if you plan on finishing your basement you MUST prepare that space before you do. For more information on the proper way to prepare your basement visit www.HomeBasementFinishing.com
